Why do we need to be safe online?

The harms online are harms you also experience in real life.

For example, if someone online says something bad about you, or bullies you, you might actually feel hurt.

Protecting yourself also leads to protecting your family and friends!

If you’re safe online, your family and friends will be safe too.

 

Bad people can try to show us things that may disturb, alarm, scare, or harm you!

Bad people online can try to hurt you and show you things that may disturb, scare, or cause you discomfort.

Bad people may also try to trick you into doing harmful things to yourself or to others!

Bad people may also try to trick you into doing things harmful to you or others.

How to be Safe Online

Watch out for strangers online! Here are some tips on what not to do when online

Do not text or call back strangers.

Do not meet with strangers you met online.

Do not add strangers on any social media.

Do not share information about your family, friends, or yourself.

Do not share any photos of your family, friends, or yourself.

Do not reply to any online messages from strangers.

Privacy is the best policy! How to keep your profile and your life safe and secure on social media

Before putting yourself out there on social media, check out this to-do list and see if your profile is safe and secure

Is your profile set on “private”? If not, get help from an adult on how to do this.

Do you know everyone on your friend list? Remove the ones you don’t.

Do you have pictures posted that others may use to hurt, abuse, disrespect, or take advantage of you? Take it down.

Is your real birth date visible on your profile? Ask an adult to set it or at least your birth year private for you.

Is your real address visible on your profile? Remove it.

Has someone sent you rude or hurtful messages? Show them to a trusted adult like your parents, older siblings, or teachers. Block them after.

Are you a member of a group or follow a page that spreads fake news, inappropriate pictures and videos, rude and hurtful words, or talk about child-inappropriate topics? Report and leave the group or unfollow the page.

Are you having a hard time doing all of this? Ask an adult for help.

Take a deep breath!

Stay calm. Remember you are not alone.

Take a screenshot.

Gather pictures of what happened to help the adults understand what you saw.

Tell a trusted adult, your teacher, or your parents

Let a parent, guardian or teacher know what happened and how you feel.

No trusted adult present? Report to authorities.
